Watch for Kids & Slow Down
Today, Monday, Aug. 24th, is the first day of school for students that attend Laramie County School District 1 schools. You may see groups of volunteers at busy intersections near schools holding signs that say "SLOW DOWN - SCHOOL ZONE" or "WATCH FOR KIDS". This is thanks to the Southern Wyoming Realtors® partnering with #ForMak. It's a reminder for drivers to drive safely when around school zones.
What is #ForMak?
#ForMak is a nonprofit that advocates for improving crosswalk safety for all. On the morning of Nov. 5, 2021, 13-year-old Makaili "Mak" Evans' was walking to school when he was hit by a distracted driver while crossing the crosswalk. The loved son and friend to many sadly passed later that morning. His mom started the nonprofit in honor of her sweet son's beautiful life. As #ForMak says on their website, they have the mission "to raise money to assist the City of Cheyenne and Laramie County School District #1 in updating the Wyoming Safe Routs to School Program plan." They host annual 5K run/walks to help raise funds to improve crosswalk safety.
Community Coming Together
#ForMak has proven to be more than just a nonprofit. It's an organization that shows amazing things can happen when a community comes together for a just cause. Over 1,000 people attended their first 5K in 2022, setting a record for the largest 5K in Wyoming history. The community really came together that year to keep our students safe by helping #ForMak raise over $161,000.
#1 Properties has been a proud supporter of #ForMak by being a sponsor for their past 5Ks and golf tournament. Our agents have also volunteered to hold signs on the first day of school, and you might just see some of them out there again today.
So the next time you are driving in a school zone, remember to slow down. Put the phone down and don't drive distracted. And watch for kids. It might seem simple, but even the smallest acts can have the biggest impact.
