Celebrating Our Veterans: The History Behind Veterans Day
On November 11th of each year, Veterans Day, gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans, however many Americans don't know how Veterans Day got its start. Veterans Day was originally called "Armistice Day", which celebrated then end of World War 1. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the "war to end all wars" came to an end on November 11, 1918. In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the 1st commemoration of Armistice Day. In 1953 congress changed the word "Armistice" to "Veterans" to make November 11th a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Veterans Day is a day set aside to thank and honor all U.S. military veterans who have served in the military during wartime or peacetime, whereas Memorial Day honors the brave men and women who have died while serving in military service.
