#1 Properties Showing up for Boys & Girls Club’s Dancing with the Stars
Community involvement can take a lot of different forms. Sometimes it means volunteering your time. Sometimes it means using your professional skills to help a local organization. And sometimes, it means stepping completely outside your comfort zone and learning to dance.
This year, Dancing with the Stars benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Wyoming has a special connection to the #1 Properties team. Members of our team, past and present, are participating in the event in different ways this year.
Their experiences look a little different, but they share the common belief that giving your time, talent and energy to something that benefits local kids is worth it.
Supporting an organization that invests in local kids
Dancing with the Stars has become one of Laramie County's biggest community events and the largest annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Wyoming. Each year, local community members are paired with dance professionals who spend months preparing for their performances while also raising money and awareness for the Boys & Girls Club. The event brings together local businesses, families, volunteers, coaches and community members around an organization focused on providing opportunities, mentorship and a safe place for local kids.
For #1 Properties agent Codee Dalton, participating this year alongside her husband, Noah Thomas, was an opportunity to support a cause that's particularly meaningful to their family.
“When Noah and I initially said yes, we did it because we love this community and believe strongly in supporting organizations that invest in our local kids. As parents of four children ourselves, the mission of the Boys & Girls Club is especially meaningful to us.”
The couple has spent the past four months learning and practicing a Halloween-themed routine, something Codee admits was well outside their normal comfort zone.
“We knew that if stepping completely outside of our comfort zone, learning to dance and maybe embarrassing ourselves a little along the way could help raise money for local kids, it was absolutely worth doing. These months of practice have given us dedicated time together, challenged us in a completely new way and reminded us how important it is to never stop dating or dancing with your spouse.”
A tradition of showing up
Codee isn’t the first member of the #1 Properties family to take part in Dancing with the Stars.
Mistie Woods, a current #1 Properties real estate agent, remembers her experience as one of the most rewarding things she's ever done. During her year, the event raised more than $80,000 for the Boys & Girls Club, and she saw firsthand how much work and heart go into making the fundraiser successful.
“What started as stepping WAY outside my comfort zone became an opportunity to help raise over $80,000 for an organization that does so much for the kids and families in our community.”
Her year featured a Western theme, one she remembers was especially fitting for Cheyenne. Since then, the event has continued to grow and evolve, including the addition of couples as participants while maintaining the creative themes that make each year's performances something the community looks forward to.
Participating in the event brought more than just the satisfaction from the fundraising efforts. Mistie also recalled the people she met during the experience became lasting friendships, including the one with her dance instructor, that began from teaching her how to dance and eventually blossomed into a close friendship with her entire family.
“I went into Dancing with the Stars hoping to make a difference for the Boys & Girls Club, but I walked away with friendships, memories, and an even greater appreciation for what can happen when a community comes together for its kids.”
Volunteering behind the scenes
Not everyone involved with Dancing with the Stars is on the dance floor.
This year, Charles Johnson, who is on the #1 Properties marketing team, is volunteering as a professional dance coach. Along with Codee, this is his first year participating in the event in that role, and after spending the past five months involved in the process, he agrees that he’s gained a new appreciation for just how much the event means to the Cheyenne community.
“When I’ve told people I’m a part of Dancing with the Stars, every person has lit up and asked me how it’s been going.”
The event requires significant commitment from everyone involved. Coaches volunteer their time and expertise, participants spend months learning and practicing their routines, and teams work to raise money and awareness for the Boys & Girls Club along the way. Despite the long hours involved, for Charles the time commitment has been well worth it.
“Even though it’s a lot of hard work and involves a lot of time, I know watching my stars perform and seeing the community impact will make it all worth it. I’ve been blessed to work with two amazing people that has made the entire process a lot of fun, although I am looking forward to getting my lunch breaks back ha.”
A familiar #1 Properties connection
There's another connection between this year's event and the #1 Properties team that happens behind the scenes.
Codee and Noah's dance coach, Heather Hansen, was formerly a member of the #1 Properties marketing team. For the past four months, she has been helping the couple prepare their Halloween-themed routine.
It's a small connection, but a fun reminder of how community involvement can bring people together in unexpected ways and how the relationships built through local businesses and organizations can continue long after someone's time on a particular team ends.
Showing up as a local business
Staff participation isn’t the only way #1 Properties is showing up for the Boys & Girls Club event. This year #1 is also sponsoring a table at Dancing with the Stars to support Team Codee & Noah alongside the Boys & Girls Club.
One thing we appreciate about Dancing with the Stars is there are so many ways to participate. You can take the stage, coach a team, volunteer behind the scenes, contribute financially, attend the event, or simply cheer on the people who have spent months preparing.
The essence of an event like this shines through when we see all the hands past and present getting involved. When we participate and bring the community together, we take care of each other.
We'll be cheering on all of this year's participants—including our own #1 Properties team members—and we're proud to support the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Wyoming and the work they do for our community.
